Our oceans are polluted.
In 2008, Congress voted to lift a 30 year ban on offshore drilling. In April 2010, almost 500,000 tons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico following an explosion on BP's Deepwater Horizon rig.

In the 2008 and 2010 election cycles, oil interests gave $37M to members of Congress.
Mountains are exploding.
A common method of coal mining is "removing" mountaintops to expose coal seams. The practice destroys forests, pollutes nearby valleys and streams, and produces airborne toxins that are dangerous to humans. Nonetheless, it is perfectly legal.

Coal mining interests have given $13M to Congress.
Our soil is dying.
Over the past 40 years, 30% of our food-producing land has become unproductive due to soil degradation. Many practices employed by modern industrial agriculture—deforestation, overuse of pesticides, excessive grazing, and repeated planting of a single crop—are what cause this degradation.

Agribusiness interests have given $205M to Congress.
The ice is melting.
Responding to scientific consensus that our climate is changing, Congress debated legislation in 2010 that would have enacted economywide caps on greenhouse gas emissions. It failed.

Oil & Gas interests spent $175M to kill the bill.
Our food is altered.
The percentage of U.S. farmland that grows genetically modified crops jumped from 3.6M acres in 1996 to 170M acres in 2012 — 47 times more. Despite uncertainty about the health effects of GMO crops, genetically modified foods are not required to be labeled.

Monsanto spent $8M to kill a measure requiring GMO labeling.
Our air is polluted.
Since 2011, the House of Representatives has passed several bills prohibiting the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating air pollution related to farming and from setting new standards for equipment used by manufacturing, petroleum, and forestry industries.

Interests supporting these bills gave over $23M to members of Congress.
